Preventative Care

One of our greatest passions is helping our young patients enjoy optimal oral health and bright, healthy smiles. That’s why we offer an array of preventative services. These include exams, cleanings, fissure sealants and patient education.

Oral Hygiene

Young toddler brushing teethAs your child develops, their teeth change. We take a look at how they’re brushing and flossing their teeth. Preventative care at home can help make sure that your child never has a hole. If your children are young, it’s important that you oversee their brushing and flossing as they won’t be old enough to do an adequate job.

We also encourage you to bring your child in for preventative care every six months, starting from the time they’re six months of age until they’re 16.

When your child turns 6 years of age, it’s a good idea to do fissure sealants, which is one type of preventative care. We recommend doing so because young children struggle to get their toothbrush right at the back.

Applying sealants is like putting on fingernail polish. You put a preventative coating over the group of teeth and that coating protects the top of the teeth where the toothbrush can’t get into the grooves. Sealants last for about two to three years.

After that time, children are old enough to brush their teeth properly or get to the back of the grooves. Sealants are relatively inexpensive and can protect teeth during a child’s young years when they may not be able to practice optimal oral hygiene.

Patient Education

  • Thumb sucking: Thumb sucking can cause many problems, including the misalignment of upper and lower jaws as well as teeth. We offer customised plans to help your child curb their thumb-sucking habit.
  • Diet: It’s no surprise that diet can affect a child’s teeth. We can look at your child’s diet and make recommendations for improvements if needed.
  • Orthodontics: We will look at your child’s facial structure and can determine if we think they need early orthodontics. The benefit of early orthodontics is you could end up saving heartache and money by addressing orthodontic concerns when your child is young versus waiting until they’re 13 and require braces. If you wait till your child is older, they may need to have multiple teeth extracted or jaw surgery.

Our goal is to do little things now that will make a massive difference when your child is older.
